Scientists have developed a non-invasive language decoder that can reconstruct speech from functional MRI data. This could help people who have lost their ability to speak due to injuries like strokes or diseases like ALS. The technology is called, Semantic Decoder and is the first to decode continuously from a non-invasive brain recording using functional MRI. The speech reconstructions are not word-for-word, but can recover the Gist of what the user is hearing. Research aims to make this technology more practical and portable.
