AI Knife Scanner Failed to Detect 42% of the Time

In a recent report, it was revealed that AI weapons scanners manufactured by Evolv Technology, which are used in hundreds of US schools, have failed to detect nearly 50% of large knives, including two incidents where students in Ohio and New York used knives in stabbings. The scanners, which use sensors and AI instead of metal detection, were found to have missed 42% of large knives in 24 walk-through tests. One incident occurred when a hunting knife was smuggled into a school in New York and used in a stabbing, while another incident involved a student in Ohio attacking a classmate with a knife. The effectiveness of Evolv’s technology has been questioned, and the company has been accused of making exaggerated marketing claims. School officials are urged to exercise caution when investing in new security technology and to consider additional screening measures. Evolv Technology has not yet commented on the matter.
