Jean Tyler, a participant in a UK study called Colo-Detect, had her bowel cancer detected and removed by artificial intelligence (AI). The study uses AI to identify areas of concern during colonoscopies, which could be missed by human detection. The trial recruited 2,000 patients from 10 NHS Trusts and the results are expected to be published this autumn. Bowel cancer is the second biggest killer cancer in the UK, claiming around 16,800 lives a year. The lead researcher described the study as “world-leading” in improving detection and AI is expected to become a major tool used by medicine in the coming years.
