Stephen Hawking had been warning about the dangers of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for years. In an interview with the BBC in 2014, the late physicist said that the development of full AI could spell the end of the human race. Hawking, who was dependent on basic forms of AI to communicate due to his disease, ALS, was critical of the technology, arguing that systems rivaling human intelligence or surpassing it could be disastrous for humanity. Months after his death in 2018, Hawking’s final book, “Brief Answers to the Big Questions,” was released, where he called for the need to align computers with human goals.
