‘Tongyi Qianwen’ Alibaba’s answer to ChatGPT

Alibaba has announced the launch of its own large language model AI system called Tongyi Qianwen. Similar to OpenAI’s GPT technology, it will be integrated into the company’s existing apps, including workplace messaging and voice assistants, and will also be offered to clients for use in their products and services. The Chinese search giant Baidu also recently debuted a similar technology that can understand multiple languages, answer questions, complete maths calculations, and generate images. The success of OpenAI’s GPT model has triggered an AI arms race around the world, with companies such as Google, Tencent, NetEase, and universities in China competing to develop their own large language models. The Chinese government has published draft rules outlining how such generative AI services should be managed, stating that they should adhere to “core socialist values” and protect user data.
